Shopify Privacy Policy Generator

A Shopify privacy policy generator built from your store's real apps

Your Shopify store runs more trackers than you think — every review app, email tool, analytics pixel and upsell app adds its own. Shopify's built-in generator can't see them. ConsentPixel scans your store first, then builds a privacy policy from the trackers it actually finds — so your disclosure matches your real store, not a generic template.

The honest part most generators skip

A privacy policy is a disclosure, not protection. Generating one doesn't make your store lawful — it describes what your store does with data. The value is in the disclosure being accurate, and on Shopify that means listing the trackers your apps actually load. That's the whole reason we scan first.

Does your Shopify store need its own privacy policy?

Yes — and this trips up a lot of merchants. Shopify's own privacy policy covers how Shopify Inc. handles data as your platform provider. It says nothing about how your store collects, uses, and shares customer data. Under GDPR, CCPA and similar laws, each merchant is treated as a separate data controller, which means every Shopify store needs its own privacy policy regardless of Shopify's platform-level one.

Shopify gives you a built-in generator to create that policy, and it's a reasonable starting point. But it has a specific blind spot that matters more than it sounds.

What Shopify's built-in generator misses

Shopify's template was designed to get a store live quickly, not to reflect the tracking reality of a store that's been running and installing apps for a year. In practice it tends to leave out:

  • The third-party trackers your apps load — analytics, reviews, email marketing, upsells, and ad pixels each drop their own, and the template lists none of them by default.
  • A data-request (DSAR) path — how a customer actually asks to see or delete their data.
  • Per-processor detail — which specific third parties receive data, by category.

The first one is the real problem. A Shopify store is an app magnet — a typical store runs a dozen apps, and many quietly add a tracking pixel. Your privacy policy is supposed to disclose those. If it lists none of them because it was generated from a blank template, the disclosure is inaccurate — and an inaccurate privacy policy misrepresents what your store actually does.

This is exactly what a scan-based generator fixes

ConsentPixel detects the trackers actually running on your store and builds the policy's tracking section from that list — automatically. Instead of a generic template that names nothing, your Shopify policy names the analytics, ad, and app pixels that are really on your store. That's a disclosure that matches reality.

Add your store details

Business name, contact, and the regulations that apply to your customers (GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, and more).

3
Generate — with a DSAR link

Your policy is built from the detected trackers plus your details, with an optional data-request (DSAR) section wired in automatically.

4

Paste it into Settings → Policies → Privacy policy, or publish to a hosted link you add to your store — one that updates at the same URL when you regenerate.

Shopify privacy policy FAQ

Does my Shopify store need its own privacy policy?

Yes. Shopify's own privacy policy only covers how Shopify Inc. handles data as your platform provider — not how your store collects, uses, or shares customer data. Under GDPR, CCPA and similar laws, each merchant is a separate data controller, so every Shopify store needs its own privacy policy. This is information, not legal advice.

What does Shopify's built-in generator miss?

It's a fine starting point, but it typically doesn't list the third-party trackers your apps and pixels actually load — analytics, reviews, email, upsell and ad apps each add their own — and it often omits DSAR request details and per-processor breakdowns. ConsentPixel builds the policy from a real scan of your store, so the tracker list reflects what's actually running.

Is the Shopify privacy policy generator free?

Document generation is included from ConsentPixel's Starter plan (from $8.99/site per month), with a 14-day free trial and no credit card to start. You can also run the free site scan without any account first, to see what's firing on your store.

How do I add the policy to my Shopify store?

Two ways. Download the generated policy and paste it into Settings → Policies → Privacy policy, or publish it to a hosted ConsentPixel URL and link that from your store — the hosted version stays in sync when you update it, so you don't re-paste HTML each time.
